The Hip Surgery Solution for Active Patients

Hip-Replacement-Surgery.JPGEvery year, more than a quarter of a million patients across the country have hip replacement surgery. Although the surgery is successful in relieving patients of their pain, many candidates for hip surgery worry that it could prevent them from enjoying an active lifestyle for months  following the procedure. But thanks to new technology, patients no longer have to worry about sitting on the sidelines.

In recent years, anterior hip replacement has gained popularity among patients and surgeons. An alternative to conventional hip replacement surgery, the anterior option allows surgeons to make an incision at the front of the hip, rather than through the buttocks or side of the hip.

“The difference in approaching hip surgery from the front rather than the side or back of the patient is that there’s less risk of affecting major muscle groups” explains David Vegari, MD, orthopaedic surgeon at Main Line Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine at Lankenau Medical Center.

What does this mean for the patient? Less pain post-surgery, less limp, no hip precautions and the opportunity to continue living an active lifestyle without nagging pain.

Still, Dr. Vegari emphasizes that an anterior hip replacement isn’t right for everyone. Patients who are on their second or third hip replacement are more complicated cases that may be better treated through the more conventional approaches to hip replacement surgery.

“At the end of the day with this approach, I do not have any surprises in the recovery room.  Because of the special orthopaedic table we utilize I can make real time adjustments with x-ray guidance.  I know that my components are positioned correctly before leaving the operating room.” says Dr. Vegari.

Dr. Vegari currently performs anterior hip replacement surgery at Lankenau Medical Center. For more information about treatment options or to make an appointment with Dr. Vegari or another Main Line Health orthopedic physician, call 1.866.225.5654 or visit our website.
